Who Should Take This Class? Anyone who has never done clogging before and wants to explore the class.

Objective: To provide a basic introduction to clogging and help new students get some experience with its fundamentals and movements.

September and January: Introduction to Clogging Basics

Orientation and Introduction

  • Welcome students and introduce the instructor.
  • Provide an overview of the course objectives and structure.
  • Discuss the history and cultural significance of clogging.
  • Warm-up exercises to prepare the body for dancing.

Basic Footwork

  • Teach basic clogging stance and posture.
  • Introduce foundational steps such as the brush, stomp, and heel dig.
  • Practice simple combinations to develop coordination and rhythm.

Rhythms and Timing

  • Explore different clogging rhythms, including single, double, and triple time.
  • Practice syncing steps with music beats.
  • Introduce the concept of downbeat and upbeat.

Review and Refinement

  • Review previously learned steps and rhythms.
  • Refine techniques and address any questions or challenges.
  • Introduce the concept of “calling” in clogging.

October, February, and March: Building Skills and Repertoire

Intermediate Steps

  • Introduce more complex steps such as the shuffle, double shuffle, and crossover.
  • Focus on proper technique and execution.
  • Incorporate variations and stylizations.

Choreography Basics

  • Introduce simple clogging routines.
  • Break down choreography into manageable sections.
  • Practice transitions between steps.

February: Group Dynamics and Performance

  • Teach students to dance in formations (e.g., lines, circles).
  • Practice performing choreography as a group.
  • Discuss stage presence and audience engagement.

November: Cultural Exploration

Regional Styles of Clogging

  • Explore different clogging styles, such as Appalachian, Irish, and Canadian.
  • Learn about the cultural influences and traditions associated with each style.
  • Watch video demonstrations of various regional clogging performances.

December, April, May: Performance Preparation

Rehearsals and Polish

  • Review choreography and refine performance skills.
  • Practice as a group to ensure synchronization and cohesion.
  • Finalize costumes and props for the performance.
