Who Should Take This Class? To enter this class, young students must complete two years of Rhythm Stomper class. Older students can take Introduction Clogging or jump right into Clogging. This course is a beginning to intermediate-level class.

Objective: Build on the fundamentals of clogging, develop basic to intermediate skills and techniques, and foster a love for clogging as a form of dance expression.

September and January: Program Introduction and Basic Technique Review

Orientation and Introduction

  • Welcome students and introduce the instructor.
  • Discuss course objectives and expectations.
  • Provide an overview of clogging history and its cultural significance.

Stance and Posture

  • Teach proper clogging stance and posture.
  • Practice maintaining balance and alignment.
  • Emphasize the importance of core engagement.

Clogging Steps

  • Introduce foundational steps such as the brush, stomp, and heel dig.
  • Break down each step into manageable components.
  • Practice transitioning smoothly between steps.

Rhythms and Timing

  • Explore different clogging rhythms, including single, double, and triple time.
  • Practice syncing steps with the music beat.
  • Introduce the concept of downbeat and upbeat.

October, February, March, and April: Building Skills and Confidence

Beginning and Intermediate Steps

  • Introduce more complex steps such as the shuffle, double shuffle, and crossover.
  • Focus on refining technique and execution.
  • Incorporate variations and stylizations.

Choreography

  • Teach simple clogging routines.
  • Break down choreography into manageable sections.
  • Practice memorizing sequences and transitions.

Group Dynamics and Formation

  • Teach students to dance in formations (e.g., lines, circles).
  • Practice maintaining spacing and alignment within the group.
  • Encourage teamwork and communication.

November and May: Performance Preparation

Rehearsals and Polish

  • Review choreography and refine performance skills.
  • Practice as a group to ensure synchronization and cohesion.
  • Finalize costumes and props for the performance.

Stage Presence and Expression

  • Discuss the importance of stage presence and facial expression.
  • Practice projecting energy and enthusiasm while performing.
  • Provide feedback on individual performance style.

Dress Rehearsals and Feedback

  • Conduct dress rehearsals in the performance space.
  • Provide constructive feedback and make any necessary adjustments.
  • Build confidence and excitement for the upcoming performance.

December and May: Performance Showcase and Reflection

Reflection and Conclusion

  • Provide students with an opportunity to reflect on their clogging journey.
  • Discuss personal growth, challenges overcome, and memorable moments.
  • Collect feedback on the course content and teaching methods.

Conclusion and Certificates

  • Review key learnings and takeaways from the course.
  • Award certificates of completion to all participants.
